This weekend’s been rather uneventful. Probably a good thing after losing a bit of money last week in poker. However that does not mean that there’s nothing interesting to report on.
Something that I was looking forward to a lot this weekend was the UFC PPV which featured the much hyped rematch between Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz, and the third match between Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski (who my brother and many others had told me is awesome) for the Heavyweight Title. Unfortunately, the card turned out to be quite uneventful to me. The opening bout between lightweights Joe Stevenson (who dropped to 155) and Yves Edwards was pretty good and was on its way to becoming a Joe Stevenson dominated fight, but Joe had busted Edwards open and the ref stopped the fight. The fight between heavyweights Frank Mir and Dan Christison was an awful one, where both were gassed by the end of the first round and walked around slower than zombies. The next fight was the much hyped Ortiz-Shamrock fight. And this one ended in less time than it takes Steve Trachsel to throw a pitch. Thanks to ref stoppage after 5 pretty much unanswered elbows, Ortiz was handed the victory. The fourth fight of the night featured a welterweight battle of Josh’s in Neer vs. Burkman. Burkman was in control most of the match and Neer never seemed to show the instinct to win. Finally, it was main event time and Arlovski faced off and.. well.. man was I disappointed with this fight. Except for the first round they basically turned it into a boxing fight, but neither man ever committed to much offense. This was just very disappointing. It’s going to take a while for UFC to make me feel strong enough to want to order another PPV.
